Dear friends of Haiti: On August 14th, a strong earthquake hit the southern peninsula of Haiti. This earthquake registered 7.2; stronger than the 7.0 earthquake that hit the Port au Prince area in 2010. A significant aftershock of 5.0 hit the same area last night. This earthquake’s center was near the town of Les Cayes, a beautiful area of Haiti. The quake has caused significant damage to buildings and over 1,200 people have died, many are injured and the expectation is that this number will continue to go much higher. Vision of Hope Ministries (VOHM) works in northern Haiti in the city of Cap Haitien and surrounding villages. I have been in contact with our people in Cap Haitien. They are all safe with no damage, as the quake did not affect the northern coast of Haiti. We are thankful for this. However, our neighbors in the southern peninsula of Haiti, near the city of Les Cayes need help. Many are homeless and tropical storm Grace is heading toward their area. If Grace hits near Les Cayes Monday or Tuesday, the disaster is compounded. VOHM does not work in southern Haiti but we are working with a rapid response NGO that may be able to air lift much needed tents and possibly other supplies to Les Cayes. We also are in contact with our partners on the ground in the area to make assessment for needs 1-to-3 weeks out and beyond. We have a doctor in Port au Prince who will disseminate medical supplies. We are activating our Disaster Relief Fund, if you would like to help support the efforts to get help to southern Haiti. You may make your donation through our VOHM website. www.visionofhopeministries.org Thank you for praying for Haiti. Blessings, Greg Schuenke President VOHM |
